17th Provesende Wine & Olive Oil Fair — 3 to 4 October
Provesende is one of the Douro's most beautiful granite villages, and for two days it turns over its main square to the two products that define this landscape: wine and olive oil. Producers pour straight from the barrel, and the olive oil tastings are the kind of thing you will not find on a tour itinerary.

Grape Harvest Festival at Casa de Mateus — 3 to 5 October
Held in the gardens of one of Portugal's most photographed baroque houses, this is the Douro's harvest celebration at its most elegant. Three days of tastings, music and food in the grounds of Casa de Mateus, just outside Vila Real.

Vinhos a Descobrir 2026, Harvest Edition — 10 to 11 October
A tasting event built around small and lesser-known producers — the estates that do not have the marketing budgets but often have the more interesting bottles. Worth it if you want to bring home something nobody else has.

Armamar Apple Fair — 2 to 4 October
Armamar sits high above the Douro and grows some of the best apples in Portugal. The fair fills the town with producers, regional food and the sort of unhurried atmosphere that makes a good half-day stop between wine estates.

Roast Lamb and Oven Rice Festival, Baião — 23 to 25 October
At the western end of the valley, Baião spends a weekend cooking its signature dish: lamb roasted slowly in a wood oven, served with rice baked in the same heat. This is one of the region's great food events and it is built around the table, not a stage.

Alijó Hiking Trails Festival — 17 to 18 October
October is the best walking month in the Douro: the heat has gone, the vines are turning, and the light in the late afternoon is extraordinary. Alijó puts on a weekend of guided routes through the terraced vineyards — the most direct way to see this landscape properly.

Gaia International Music Festival — until 17 October
Now in its 32nd edition, running across venues in Vila Nova de Gaia — a short tram ride from central Porto and an easy evening if you are basing yourself in the city.

Planning your October trip
October is shoulder season in the Douro, which means two practical advantages: accommodation is noticeably cheaper than in September, and the wine estates have time to talk to you properly now that the harvest is over. Book the weekend of 3 to 5 October early, though — with both Provesende and Casa de Mateus running, it is the busiest weekend of the month.
Bring layers. Daytime temperatures are comfortable, but the valley cools quickly once the sun drops behind the terraces.
